Previously, rue du Chemin de Pantin was shown on Verniquet’s map of Paris (1789). Prior to 1830, rue La Fayette was known as rue Charles X. It owes its name to the Marquis de la Fayette. A general and French political figure as well as the first commander of the Paris National Guard, he took part in the American Revolution. He may be regarded by Michaud’s Biographie Universelle as the most complete and steadfast personification of the revolutionary principles that shook the foundations of old European society.
